Sometimes it’s hard to understand the differences in terms like “editing”, “audio cleanup”, and “repair”. That’s why there are a few sound bites below!
I recommend listening with headphones to really appreciate the changes in audio. Each sample was recorded with a phone to pick up as many extra, unwanted sounds as possible …
Repair
Repairs are for those times when you need a persistent sound removed. HVAC sounds, reverb, crowd noises, and other similar sounds. Nothing fancy - just a quick fix. The examples below are pretty severe, so the point is to just show how certain sounds can be minimized.
Cleanup
“Cleanup” is a simple way to talk about audio mixing and mastering. That’s the fancy way of saying someone is balancing the overall audio and making it sound better. Whether someone is unaware of their own volume (like the example below), or maybe your recording has one person louder than the other - I can help with that!
Editing
This is an example of cutting out the initial few seconds of audio that didn’t contribute to the final product. This idea can be applied to single words or entire sentences throughout a project. Or - maybe you do a lot of the dreaded “ums” or “ahs” … it’s no problem! Everyone does it. In fact - it’s okay to leave some in the final cut.
