Create an Outline
Many people think they can just do a podcast without any planning or thought into what the show will be about … sometimes they are right, but that is often not the case. I was just listening to a popular podcast episode the other day, and the hosts of the show were bragging about how they don’t need to script anything. As they were wasting about 10 minutes of my life explaining this - I thought, “You could really benefit from using an outline right now and get to the topic that made me click on your show …”
“It will help guide your thoughts!”
You don’t have to have 20 pages of a script (although you might if you have an in-depth narrative podcast), but consider a simple outline. It will help guide your thoughts - especially when you go off on a tangent with the guest, or maybe you start to vent about something you are passionate toward. The outline will be there to help guide your thoughts back to “home base” when you’re ready to get back on track. Again - it doesn’t have to be extensive.
If you have guests on your show, they may benefit from having a list of potential questions so they can prepare themselves, and appreciate the thought you’ve put into them coming on your podcast. That list of questions can also double as your “outline.” you don’t have to go in order, but you can keep track of what’s been asked as the interview progresses.
